- The diurnal photosynthetic variation of potted oneyearold seedlings of Robinia pseudoacacia was studied under three soil moisture conditions which were suitable soil moisture, medium drought and severe drought(75%, 50% and 35% of saturated soil moisture content). The results showed that the diurnal change of a certain photosynthetic physiological parameter (e.g. net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance(Gs), transpiration rate(Tr), stomatal limitation value(Ls), carboxylation efficiency(CE), intercellular CO2 concentration(Ci) or use efficiency(WUE)) was of similar trend under different soil moisture conditions. The diurnal variation of Pn presented a hyperbolic curve and a clear nap phenomenon at noon. Of the seven test time points in a full day, the Pn, Gs,Tr,Ls and CE all showed a trend as normal soil moisture> moderate drought stress> severe drought stress, but the Ci showed a tendency: severe drought stress > moderate drought stress> normal soil moisture. The WUE showed differences in different time interval of a day, indicating Robinia pseudoacacia could adapt itself to the changes of external environment to maintain efficient WUE by physical adjustment mechanism. With soil moisture reduction, the Pn declined by nonstomatal control from 8:00 to 10:00 and by stomatal control from 10:00 to 12:00.
