- Abstract:
- Natural organic matter (NOM) in drinking water was simulated by a mixture of humid acid and fulvic acid, which was removed by electro-coagulation/oxidation-ultrafiltration(EC/O-UF) process. The effects of current density, initial organic concentration, initial pH and initial conductivity on NOM removal were investigated. Additionally, the mechanism of EC/O-UF was explored and the reasons for membrane fouling were analyzed. When current density was 10 A/m2, initial pH was 7,initial NOM concentration was 10 mg/L and initial conductivity was 1 000 μS/cm, the removal efficiency of NOM by EC/O-UF reached 94%-97%. During the removal process, NOM was first oxidized into small molecules, which improved the polarity of the cake layer. Then the organic matter was coagulated prior to filtration to form a filter cake layer with more polarized structure, thereby mitigated membrane fouling. Membrane fouling was mainly caused by particulate matters formed by aluminum flocculants and NOM, and membrane flux could be restored to 93%-96% of the original one after acid chemical cleaning.
