- Abstract:
- Wastewater-marking pharmaceuticals (WWMPs) are emerging contaminants in urban rivers. Nine WWMPs including azithromycin (AZM), sulfathiazole (STZ), ibuprofen (IBU), diclofenac (DCF), paracetamol (PRC), atenolol (ATL), clofibrate (CLF), carbamazepine (CBM) and caffeine (CAF) were selected as the target compounds, and purification effects of artificial ecosystem with different hydrophytes (Cyperus alternifolius, Juncus effusus and Acorus calamus L.) on water quality of urban rivers were investigated by monitoring 4 conventional indicators in liquid phase and the changes of WWMPs in liquid phase, sediment and plant tissue. There were no significant changes of 4 conventional indicators (COD, TP, TN and NH4+-N) in the artificial ecosystem without plant, while their concentrations in the artificial ecosystems with hydrophyte decreased by 49.5%, 52.1%, 57.8% and 74.2%, respectively. Compared with the non-plant system, ecosystems with hydrophyte had a significant removal effect on WWMPs in liquid phase, especially for CBM, IBU, ATL and PRC, and the removal efficiencies were greater than 33.8%. The removal of ATL, AZM, CBM, IBU and PRC in sediments by the ecosystem with Cyperus alternifolius and Acorus calamus L. was not remarkable. In plant tissue, no matter above-water and underwater parts, good absorption effects of CAF, CBM and CLF were obtained. Artificial ecosystem with hydrophyte can effectively remove WWMPs and conventional pollutants in urban rivers, and is an effective means for improving water quality of urban rivers.
