- In view of the problems existed in the current traditional process for the treatment of high ammonia nitrogen and low carbon to nitrogen ratio wastewater, the application of electrodeionization (EDI) to extract ammonia nitrogen can not only reduce the difficulty and cost of the traditional treatment process, but also realize the recycle of ammonia nitrogen. The effects of voltage and feed flow on the performance of EDI for extracting ammonia nitrogen from landfill leachate were investigated. When the voltage and feed flow were 20 V and 8 mL/min, the ammonia nitrogen removal rate and the optimal extraction rate were 81.7% and 67.3%, respectively, and the current efficiency and energy consumption were 23.4% and 1.9 kW·h/g (calculated in N) after operation of the EDI device for 8 hours. In addition, the surface characteristics of the membrane before and after fouling and after cleaning in different ways were observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the recovery of EDI performance after cleaning was investigated. The performance of EDI for extraction of ammonia nitrogen was restored to the initial level by alternately cleaning with 3% acid and alkali solution.
