- Abstract:
- This paper investigated the content of iron manganese composite oxide formed on the surface of quartz sand and its performance for simultaneous removal of ammonia nitrogen and manganese in a pilot-scale test by setting different backwash intensity, filtration velocity and influent iron and manganese concentrations. The start-up time of the filter column with low backwash intensity (12 d) was 16.67% shorter than that with high backwash intensity (14 d). However, the growth rate of oxide content on the surface of filter media at high backwash intensity (1.223 4 mg/g) was 29.61% faster than that at low backwash intensity. The high filtration velocity (8 m/h) shortened the start-up time of the filter column and improved the removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen and manganese. In addition, the filter column start-up time was shorter at higher influent iron and manganese concentrations (0.5 mg/L), and the oxide content on the surface of the filter media increased faster, which reduced the adverse effect of high backwash intensity on the removal performance of ammonia nitrogen and manganese.
