- Abstract:
- Based on extensive research literature and data from official platforms at home and abroad, this study provides an overview of greenhouse gas emissions from traditional non-sewered sanitation systems (NSSS). The periodic law, influencing factors and mitigation measures of greenhouse gas emissions were dialectically analyzed, and the measuring methods of greenhouse gases, such as common experimental method, detection method and accounting method, were summarized. The analysis results showed that the CH4 emission from septic tanks is (731-46 750)×104 tCO2-eq/year, while the CH4 emission from pit toilets is (1 072-28 464)×104 tCO2-eq/year, accounting for 0.09%-5.81% and 0.13%-3.53% of the total anthropogenic CH4 emissions worldwide, respectively. The emission of greenhouse gases from NSSS have obvious seasonal and diurnal variation rules, which are influenced by environmental factors. However, there is a lack of systematic accounting for quantifying greenhouse gas emission fluxes in different regions. Further exploration is necessary to understand the mechanisms behind these emissions and develop robust quantitative analysis methods for the sustainable management of NSSS, which can provide scientific basis for sustainable management of non-sewer sanitation systems.
