- Abstract:
- Irreversible membrane fouling is the main factor limiting long-term stable operation of membrane bioreactor (MBR), and traditional sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) cleaning may exacerbate subsequent membrane fouling in MBR systems. For this reason, this study proposed a base-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) chemical cleaning method with no use of NaClO for hollow flat-sheet ceramic MBR. The chemical cleaning efficiency could reach 70.9% at PMS concentration of 1.0 mmol/L and NaOH concentration of 0.03 mol/L, which was higher than NaClO under the same cleaning conditions (60.6%). The NaOH/PMS system preferentially removed polysaccharides and proteins on the membrane surface, and effectively peeled off the cake layer, thus restoring the membrane flux. Mechanism analysis displayed that singlet oxygen (1O2) was the major reactive species contributing to elimination of irreversible fouling during the chemical cleaning. NaOH/PMS was a highly efficient and clean chemical cleaning method for ceramic membrane, and the cost of cleaning solution was approximately 1.11 yuan/m3.
