- Abstract:
- Microplastics (MPs), as one of the most significant emerging contaminants, have become a focal point of research in the field of water environment in recent years. The biological nitrogen removal process has been widely used in domestic/industrial wastewater secondary wastewater treatment system. However, wastewater treatment plants, acting as both sources and sinks for MPs, inevitably face potential impacts from the presence of MPs on biological wastewater treatment processes. This study systematically reviewed the sources, current pollution status, and prevalence of MPs in wastewater treatment plants, with a particular focus on their effects on the reactions and activities of functional bacteria involved in nitrogen removal. The influence mechanisms of MPs on biological nitrogen removal was analyzed, and the development direction of future research was proposed. The results of this study will provide a theoretical basis for the design, operation and optimization of wastewater treatment systems with biological nitrogen removal in the presence of MPs.
