- Abstract:
- Halogenated hydantoins, a new type of halogen disinfectants, are gaining increasing attention. Halogenated hydantoins include 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin, 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin, and 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin. They exhibit strong oxidizing power and long-lasting slow-release characteristics, showing comparable or even superior disinfection efficiency compared with chlorine-based disinfectants. They are effective against a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and spores. However, research on halogenated hydantoins remains insufficiently systematic or comprehensive. This paper reviews the disinfection efficacy against common microbial species found in industrial wastewater, recreational water, aquaculture, and fresh food products. It also discusses their disinfection mechanisms and influencing factors, while evaluating the potential for disinfection by-product formation and associated toxicity risks. The paper summarizes the current research issues concerning halogenated hydantoins, and concludes by offering an outlook on future research directions, highlighting the need for further investigation into the disinfection mechanisms, the characteristics of disinfection by-products, and the toxic risks of both the by-products and the halogenated hydantoins.
