- To address the operational challenges posed by Melosira granulata contamination in water treatment plants, this study evaluated algae removal efficiency through pre-oxidation, enhanced coagulation, and their hybrid processes, with a focus on algal density, pH, and Zeta potential. Experimental results demonstrated that enhanced coagulation achieved a removal rate of 98.71% for algae in raw water with algal density below 105 cells/L. Chlorine-based pre-oxidation improved removal efficiency to 99.19% at algal densities of 105-106 cells/L, while the hybrid pre-oxidation-coagulation process maintained 99.95% removal efficiency even under high algal loading (106-107 cells/L). Mechanistic analysis revealed a negative correlation between pH and Zeta potential. Adjusting pH to 7.5-8.0 effectively increased Zeta potential, thereby enhancing coagulation efficiency. Xanthan gum as a coagulant aid significantly removed peptides, proteins, and humic acids through hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, and adsorption-bridging effects, promoting floc formation and sedimentation. These findings provide date support for process optimization in water treatment plants during algal bloom periods.
