- Abstract:
- Water quality variation and the complexity of microbial communities are closely associated with the safety of water supply system (WSS). A comprehensive understanding of microbial community dynamics from the source water to the tap water is critical for mitigating the risk of waterborne diseases and ensuring the safety and quality of drinking water. The 16S rRNA sequencing technique, together with multivariate statistical analysis methods, was employed to systematically investigate the spatiotemporal distribution patterns, assembly mechanisms, and response to environmental variables of the microbial communities within a multi?source and multi-waterworks WSS. After undergoing treatment at various waterworks, the total organic carbon(TOC) removal efficiency of multi-source water ranged from 73.3% to 85.7%. The treatment effectiveness tended to be lower in summer compared to spring, and microbial diversity showed a gradual decline from the source water to tap water. The Shannon index of microorganisms throughout the entire WSS was observed to be 8.5% to 19.8% higher during summer compared to spring. The interactions within the microbial community, including both competitive and cooperative effects, exhibited increased complexity. However, the microbial assembly mechanisms across different seasons and treatment stages were predominantly governed by deterministic processes. The distribution and survival of pathogenic and chlorine?tolerant bacteria within the WSS were influenced by physicochemical indicators. In spring, TOC emerged as a significant factor, whereas in summer, dissolved oxygen (DO) and residual chlorine played more critical regulatory roles.
