- Abstract:
- Surface water exhibiting high alkalinity and hardness is particularly susceptible to scaling issues. This study introduced hydrogen ions during coagulation to reduce alkalinity, evaluated the effects of this approach on turbidity and scale control by measuring turbidity, post-boiling turbidity, alkalinity, hardness, and temporary hardness, and investigated the impact of the introduced hydrogen ions on the coagulation process and on the loss of calcium and magnesium ions during boiling by analyzing Zeta potential and the concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions after boiling, so as to simultaneously control scale formation during the water treatment process. The introduction of hydrogen ions effectively reduced the alkalinity of drinking water. When alkalinity fell below 107.9 mg/L, the turbidity after boiling was reduced to only 0.38 NTU, and the temporary hardness reached 12 mg/L. The water remained clear with no visible floating matter on the surface. Concurrently, the retention rates of calcium and magnesium ions increased by 46% and 17%, respectively.
