- Abstract:
- A pilot-scale study was conducted to evaluate the pre-treatment effectiveness of an integrated process combining high-speed flotation, ozonation, and pulse adsorption of powdered activated carbon on the raw water quality sourced from a large reservoir in northern China. When the permanganate index of raw water ranged from 5.4 mg/L to 9.6 mg/L, the algae count was between 83.2 million per liter and 196.4 million per liter, and chlorophyll a concentration ranged from 51.97 μg/L to 83.63 μg/L, the permanganate index of the effluent from the combined process was reduced to below 3 mg/L, achieving a removal efficiency exceeding 60%. The algae count was effectively reduced to below 20 million per liter, with a removal efficiency of 86% to 93%. Chlorophyll a concentration was reduced to below 1 μg/L, with a removal efficiency of above 98%. When the concentration of 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) in raw water was not more than 200 ng/L, the concentration of 2-MIB in the effluent of the combined treatment process was below 10 ng/L. When the 2-MIB concentration in raw water ranged from 200 ng/L to 400 ng/L, the 2-MIB concentration in the effluent of the combined process remained below 30 ng/L, with a removal efficiency exceeding 88%. When the alkalinity of the raw water was relatively low, the alkalinity of the effluent from the combined process exceeded that of the raw water after the addition of sodium bicarbonate. This integrated process demonstrated a relatively high removal efficiency for algae, organic matters, and 2-MIB. It is therefore well?suited for use as a pre-treatment method for raw water sourced from reservoirs characterized by high algae count and high odor. The treated effluent quality met the intake requirements of downstream water purification plants that primarily employ conventional treatment processes.
