- This study investigated the influence of sodium hypochlorite (SH) on acid production in anaerobic fermentation of excess sludge (ES), and systematically analyzed the underlying mechanisms, so as to enhance the accumulation of short?chain fatty acids (SCFA) during the anaerobic fermentation of sludge. SH enhanced the production of SCFA during sludge anaerobic fermentation. The optimal concentration of SH was determined to be 3%, at which the maximum SCFA yield (calculated by VSS) reached 186.5 mg/g, representing a 1.95?fold increase compared to the blank group. SH promoted sludge pyrolysis, thereby increasing the soluble chemical oxygen demand, dissolved protein concentration, and dissolved polysaccharide concentration in the fermentation system, providing essential substrate support for acidogenic microorganisms. Additionally, SH facilitated the release of NH4+-N, with its concentration showing a positive correlation with the released NH4+-N. Enzyme activity analysis revealed that SH enhancedthe activities of key enzymes associated with hydrolysis and acidification, reduced coenzyme F420 activity, and consequently promoted the accumulation of SCFA. The findings expand the application domains of SH and provide a theoretical foundation for the efficient utilization of resources in ES.
