- Abstract:
- Zeolite, iron-carbon composites, and pyrite were selected as fillers for constructed wetlands to evaluate their performance in removing conventional pollutants from rural sewage as well as typical estrogenic pollutants, including estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). Additionally, the pollutants removal efficiency of conventional zeolite-filled constructed wetlands was examined under varying hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Under the same HRT, the iron-carbon-filled constructed wetland exhibited the highest removal efficiency for both conventional pollutants and estrogens, followed by the pyrite-filled constructed wetland. Compared with the zeolite-filled constructed wetland, the iron-carbon-filled system achieved 29.30%, 47.39%, 30.80%, and 62.38% higher removal efficiencies for COD, NH3-N, TN, and TP, respectively, and demonstrated 59.49%, 63.65%, and 45.35% greater removal efficiencies for E1, E2, and EE2, respectively. In zeolite-filled constructed wetlands, the removal efficiency of both conventional pollutants and estrogenic pollutants gradually improved with increasing HRT. Compared to the HRT of 12 hours, extending the HRT to 36 hours resulted in increases in the removal efficiencies of COD, NH3-N, TN, and TP by 20.12%, 20.22%, 10.98%, and 34.35%, respectively. Similarly, the removal efficiencies of E1, E2, and EE2 were enhanced by 43.68%, 37.75%, and 39.78%, respectively.
