- Abstract:
- Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes modified with three types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation method. The effects of pristine MWCNTs, carbonylated MWCNTs (MWCNTs-COOH), and hydroxylated MWCNTs (MWCNTs-OH) on the structure and properties of the PVDF membranes were investigated. The results indicated that MWCNTs-COOH and MWCNTs-OH enhanced the surface hydrophilicity and total surface tension. The MWCNTs-COOH modified membrane exhibited a pure water flux 1.6 times that of the pristine membrane. The rejection of HA and BSA increased from 97.5% and 75.4% to 98.0% and 95.5%, respectively. The flux recovery rate for HA improved from 82.7% to 98.5%, whereas that for BSA decreased from 91.5% to 69.0%. The anti-fouling mechanisms were further elucidated using the XDLVO theory.
