- Manganese and iron deposits, which are widely present in drinking water distribution systems, may participate in the migration and transformation of dissolved aluminum, thereby influencing its speciation and exposure risk. This study investigated the enrichment behavior of dissolved aluminum by manganese and iron oxides under various conditions and explored the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that at an oxide concentration of 1 mg/L and an initial aluminum concentration of 150 μg/L, both manganese and iron oxides exhibited significant enrichment capacities. The formation pathway of the oxides had a pronounced effect on aluminum enrichment. Under the same concentration, manganese and iron oxides generated in situ from Mn(Ⅱ) and Fe(Ⅲ) exhibited higher aluminum enrichment capacities than their preformed counterparts. pH was identified as a key factor influencing the enrichment process, with increasing pH leading to a notable decline in enrichment capacities. Compared to pure water, manganese and iron oxides showed enhanced aluminum enrichment in actual tap water, suggesting that multivalent ions and natural organic matter may synergistically promote the enrichment process.
