- Abstract:
- Located in the mountainous region of southern Jiangxi, Shangyou County requires an investment of 25 000 yuan per household for the conventional treatment of decentralized rural domestic wastewater, with an annual operational cost of 400 yuan per household. The suctioned mini-flush modern resource-recycle is a sanitation technology that employs suctioned mini-flush toilets for the resourceful collection, harmless treatment of human wastes and reuse of fecal fertilizer. The source separated miscellaneous wastewater is treated to meet standards for discharge or reuse. The water consumption of the suctioned mini-flush toilets is ≤1.5 L per use, resulting in concentrated fecaluria with a small volume. In Shangyou County, an on-site design of the suctioned mini-flush modern resource-recycle sanitation was implemented in seven villages, covering a total of 363 households, with 223 households actually installed. The installation project included indoor toilet renovations (an average of 1.2 per household), necessary septic tank updates (approximately 33% of households), household drainage renovation, treatment of mixed domestic wastewater to meet standards, surface restoration, and the provision of one 2 m-fecal suction truck for each village. The results indicate that the project meets modern sanitation requirements, harmless treatment standards for fecal waste, and wastewater discharge standards, while aligning with sustainability. The residents are generally satisfied with the implementation outcomes. The final investment cost is calculated as 10 003.65 yuan per household based on the actual number of installations, and 6 145.49 yuan per household based on the requirement of completing the village-wide treatment task. The system requires minimal maintenance, low professionalization, and is resilient to population fluctuations and temperature changes, with daily management primarily carried out by the households. All the recycled fertilizers are utilized through self-use by the households and neighborhood cooperation. This case study represents the first application of the suctioned mini-flush modern resource-recycle sanitation in the subtropical southern mountainous region for rural domestic sewage management.
