- Abstract:
- To address the challenges of low nitrogen removal efficiency in conventional constructed wetlands (CWs) and limited access to reliable electricity in rural areas, a novel passive aeration constructed wetland system was developed. This system features maifanite and activated alumina balls (10∶1) as the phosphorus removal substrate and CaO2?based slow-release oxygen materials (with an oxygen release period of approximately 125 days) as its core component. Under the influent conditions with COD of (180.24±3.59) mg/L, TP of (2.88±0.11) mg/L, NH4+-N of (25.85±0.48) mg/L, and TN of (34.02±1.29) mg/L, the system achieved removal efficiencies of (89.65±1.89)%, (77.68±2.46)%, (79.44±0.63)% and (64.35±2.23)% for COD, TP, NH4+-N and TN, respectively. The effluent quality consistently met the first level B standard specified in the Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant (GB 18918-2002). Cost analysis revealed a first-year construction and operation cost of approximately CNY 35 500. This study provides a practical and economically viable alternative for efficient nitrogen and phosphorus removal in decentralized rural domestic sewage treatment systems.
