- Abstract:
- Traditional packing media exhibit limitations in treating complex water quality raw water, including low filtration efficiency and high maintenance expenses. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop new packing media to enhance water purification performance and reduce operational costs. The performance of a new packing medium—primarily composed of coal coke slag and activated zeolite—in terms of filtration, adsorption, and flocculation sedimentation for drinking water purification was systematically evaluated. Using the effluent from the sedimentation tank of a surface water purification plant in a town in Liaoning Province as the source water, a comparative filtration experiment was conducted between the new packing media and conventional quartz sand to assess key operational parameters, including filtration efficiency and filtration cycle. The new packing media were sintered at high temperature and its primary components were silicon, iron, aluminum, and carbon. Under filtration velocities ranging from 8.15 m/h to 12.80 m/h, the filtration capacity of the new packing media increased by approximately 16% to 60% compared to conventional quartz sand. Furthermore, the effluent turbidity was lower than 0.5 NTU, with Al3+ concentration of 0.16~0.19 mg/L, both parameters demonstrating superior performance relative to traditional quartz sand. Therefore, the new packing media has the potential to replace traditional quartz sand, as it can enhance both the filtration capacity and the overall process performance.
