- Abstract:
- To effectively address the prevalent issue of sludge bulking in domestic wastewater treatment plants, this study investigated a case of filamentous sludge bulking that occurred in the Third Wastewater Treatment Plant of Guyuan City, which employs a multi-mode AAOAO process combined with rectangular sedimentation tank and deep-bed sand filtration. The effectiveness of chemical control strategies, specifically the addition of flocculant and disinfectant, on mitigating sludge bulking was evaluated under full-scale conditions. Although the addition of polyacrylamide (PAM) alone demonstrated notable effects in small-scale trials, its performance remained unsatisfactory in full-scale applications, where it was highly prone to causing equipment blockages and operational issues within the sludge treatment system. However, the proportion of Microthrix parvicella (MP) was reduced from 29.50% to 5.22% within just 15 days by implementing a disinfectant dosing strategy combined with microscopic monitoring. This approach effectively restored the system’s sedimentation performance without inhibiting other functional microbial populations. The practical application results demonstrated that rapid and targeted control of MP sludge bulking could be achieved without compromising effluent quality by rationally designing the disinfectant dosing location, strictly controlling the dosage and frequency of effective chlorine, and integrating auxiliary process monitoring.
