An Engineering Example of Gravity-based High-speed Sludge Thickening Technology at Certain Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant

- The sewage treatment plant in a certain town in Hunan Province has a designed capacity of 450 000 m3/d. The sludge generated consists of excess activated sludge from phase Ⅰ IFAS, initial sedimentation sludge and biological filter humic sludge from phase Ⅱ, and excess activated sludge from phase Ⅲ MBR. The average sludge flow rate stands at 6 346 m3/d, with an average sludge concentration of 6 160 mg/L. To address the issues of sludge flow exceeding the capacity of centrifugal dewatering machines and the occupied area is large in conventional sludge concentration tanks, three sets of steel structure gravity-based high-speed sludge concentration devices has been constructed. The actual operation results show that the average sludge flow rate is 3 291 m3/d, the average flow ratio is 2.07, the average sludge concentration is 14 274 mg/L, and the average concentration ratio is 2.42. The ideal concentration effect meets the design requirements. The disposal cost for this device is 0.198 CNY/m3. The overall energy consumption of sludge dewatering is reduced by 39.67%. This device effectively concentrates and reduces sludge volume, with low land occupation, fully automatic operation, flexible configuration, short construction period, and no total phosphorus release and sludge leakage problems.
