- In response to issues such as overly complex technology, high operational costs, and inadequate maintenance and management in domestic wastewater treatment in mountain villages of China, a pilot-scale system integrating a gravity-driven rotating biological contactor with a multi-stage horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland was designed and stably operated, leveraging the local geographical characteristic of significant elevation differences. This combined process effectively removed pollutants from the actual wastewater, achieving average removal rates of 73.3%, 66.4%, 67.8%, and 81.7% for COD, NH4+-N, TN, and TP, respectively. The effluent quality met local discharge standards. Comparative analysis of pollutant removal performance revealed that the bio-rope fillers, enriched with algae, enhanced the system’s pollutant removal capacity and resilience to shock loads. Furthermore, biomass and activity of bacterial and algal were better. The system with the fillers showed a higher abundance of bacteria such as Flavobacterium, Rhodobacter, and Rhodobacteraceae, which possessed denitrification and phosphorus removal capabilities. Additionally, as the system operated solely by gravitational potential energy without any feed pumps or other external power inputs, its energy demand was drastically reduced, making the process economically attractive.
