- Abstract:
- Seasonal high manganese levels in reservoir water sources pose a significant risk to drinking water safety. This study systematically investigated the migration and transformation patterns of manganese in the water source-water treatment plant system during high manganese periods, focusing on a coagulation-sedimentation-ultrafiltration short-process water treatment plant in northern China. The results showed that the raw water manganese concentration exhibited intermittent fluctuations and manganese deposition was observed in the pipeline network. Coagulation-sedimentation demonstrated high efficiency in removing particulate manganese (removal rate>90.0%), but exhibited inconsistent performance for dissolved manganese (removal rate: 14.8%-90.0%). Ultrafiltration further removed particulate manganese with an average removal rate of 10.9%, but showed no significant effect on dissolved manganese removal. The study confirmed that a combined approach of “moderate pre-oxidation+enhanced powdered activated carbon adsorption” effectively controlled dissolved manganese (removal rate:82.2%). Based on these findings, a multi-stage collaborative control strategy was proposed, integrating source water early warning and process optimization, providing technical support for short- process water treatment plants to address seasonal high manganese challenges.
