- Abstract:
- Fenton processes have attracted considerable research interest and attention for the degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) in wastewater. However, the formation of toxic oxidation by- products has hindered the safe application of Fenton-based advanced oxidation processes. This review systematically discusses the reaction characteristics of Fenton and its derived Fenton-like advanced oxidation processes (F-AOPs) applied to ECs degradation; the types, risks, influencing factors, and formation mechanisms of toxic oxidation by-products generated during ECs degradation; and the control strategies for such by-products. This review suggests that future efforts should integrate new approaches, such as artificial intelligence and DFT calculations, to comprehensively predict product toxicity and investigate the mechanisms of toxic by-product formation. At the same time, new technologies should be employed to design and apply efficient, low-toxicity catalyst systems, thereby promoting the safe and green application of F-AOPs in water treatment.
