- Abstract:
- Electrodialysis (ED) desalination technology has attracted considerable attention, with the performance of its core component, the cation exchange membrane (CEM), being of paramount importance. To address the poor monovalent ion selectivity of conventional CEMs, this study employed a layer-by-layer self-assembly method, utilizing polydopamine (PDA) as an adhesive layer and introducing a composite layer of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and sulfonated metal-organic framework (UiO-66-SO3H). A PDA/PEI/UiO-66-SO3H triple synergistic modification strategy was proposed, leading to the fabrication of a selective cation exchange membrane. The microstructure, surface properties, and ion separation performance of the modified membrane were systematically investigated. Results indicated that UiO-66-SO3H nanoparticles could be stably and efficiently immobilized on the membrane surface, significantly enhancing membrane hydrophilicity and ion exchange capacity. The monovalent ion selectivity for Na+/Mg2+ increased remarkably from 2.12 to 32.83, and that for Li+/Mg2+ from 0.99 to 14.75, demonstrating excellent monovalent ion sieving capability. This strategy effectively integrates size sieving, electrostatic attraction, and regulation of ion hydration properties, with the synergistic enhancement mechanism identified as the key to achieving high monovalent selectivity in the modified membrane.
