- To address the issues of high cost of external carbon sources in biological wastewater treatment, limited rejection performance of conventional nanofiltration (NF) membranes toward small-molecule organic carbon sources, and the difficulty in achieving efficient resource recovery of carbon sources from organic wastewater, this study fabricated a composite material by complexing Fe3+ with tannic acid (TA) and coated it onto the surface of thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes for the separation and recovery of small-molecule organic carbon sources from wastewater. Experimental results showed that the optimally modified membrane, designated as TFC-Fe-3 (with a Fe3+ to TA molar ratio of 3∶1), achieved a Na2SO4 rejection rate as high as 99.81%. Compared with the unmodified TFC membrane, the TFC-Fe-3 membrane exhibited increases in rejection rates of 17.47 percentage point, 17.17 percentage point, and 13.48 percentage point for acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid, respectively, demonstrating a significantly enhanced rejection capability toward small-molecule organic carbon sources. Systematic investigation of the separation performance of the TFC-Fe-3 membrane for small-molecule organic carbon sources under various operating conditions confirmed that the membrane’s separation performance was governed by the combined effects of size sieving and the Donnan effect. The modified membrane effectively overcomes the inherent limitation of conventional NF membranes in rejecting small-molecule organic carbon sources and enables efficient recovery of organic carbon sources from wastewater.
