- Abstract:
- With the advancement of the standard for nitrogen removal from wastewater, challenges such as insufficient carbon sources and low nitrogen removal efficiency have emerged in biological nitrogen removal processes. To address these issues, researchers have been exploring the combination of chemical and biological methods to reduce the demand for organic carbon sources and enhance the effectiveness of biological nitrogen removal. The removal of nitrate nitrogen by iron-carbon micro-electrolysis (IC-ME) was introduced and the galvanic cell reaction theory of IC-ME was briefly described. The influence of different iron electrode and carbon electrode on the reaction, and the impact factors and reaction mechanism of chemical denitrification and coupled biological denitrification by micro-electrolysis were also summarized. Additionally, the enhanced effect of IC-ME process on biological nitrogen removal was analyzed from the perspectives of the growth environment and microbial enzymes. Finally, this paper addressed the current challenges and proposes future development directions for the system.
