- Abstract:
- This study took two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs)with different processes in Handan, China, as the research subjects, aiming to explore the abundance characteristics of microplastics(MPs)in their influent and the removal effects of different treatment units on microplastics of various shapes, sizes, colors, and types. Density flotation and dissolution separation were used to extract MPs, which were observed under a stereomicroscope and analyzed for their occurrence characteristics using a Fourier transform microscopic infrared spectrometer. The results indicated that the microplastics in the influent were mainly fibrous, with the dominant particle size of 0-0.5 mm, and the main polymer types were polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). The total removal rates of microplastics by the two WWTPs were (83.62±1.59)% and (93.20±2.17)%, respectively. There was a difference in the removal ability of microplastics between two WWTPs, which was related to their different treatment processes. Fibrous MPs were the most difficult to remove; as the size of MPs decreased, the difficulty of removal increased; color was not a factor affecting the removal of MPs.
