- Abstract:
- A productive experiment was conducted in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Southern Jiangsu Province to investigate the granulation process and pollutants removal efficiency of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) inoculated with pelletizing agents based on AAO. The results showed that successful AGS granulation could be achieved within 14 days, with an average particle size of 186 μm and 34.6% of AGS exceeding 200 μm. During the sludge inoculation phase, microorganisms aggregated into compact sludge clusters using pelletizing agents as carriers, which subsequently underwent further granulation under hydraulic shear forces in the bioreactor. The modified process exhibited enhanced pollutant removal performance, with effluent COD, TN, and TP concentrations reaching 39 mg/L, 9.7 mg/L, and 0.23 mg/L respectively, representing 3%, 5%, and 4% reductions compared to the original process, while maintaining stable effluent quality. Compared with conventional AAO processes, this process not only improves the pollutants removal capacity, but also reduces the energy consumption and residual sludge production, and has the potential to be used for upgrading continuous flow WWTPs.
