- Abstract:
- To address the issues of carbon source dependence, high operational cost and intensive carbon emissions associated with heterotrophic denitrification for advanced denitrification of municipal wastewater, this study independently developed sulfur-based biological composite fillers and constructed an integrated facility with a treatment capacity of 500-900 m3/d. A 117-day field trial was conducted at Longtang Wastewater Treatment Plant in Qingyuan City. The results demonstrated that during the stable operation stage, the average nitrate nitrogen removal efficiency of the system reached 81.98%-93.46%, with an average nitrogen removal load of 0.41 kg/(m3·d), which was 1.40-1.68 times that of the conventional sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification process. The effluent total nitrogen concentration was stably below 5 mg/L. The filler presented excellent alkalinity buffering capacity, with no acidification or compaction observed, and a sulfur disproportionation-sulfur oxidation coupled functional microbial community was established. The unit water treatment cost of this process was merely 0.156 yuan/m3, 31% lower than that of heterotrophic denitrification. Moreover, the process required no external carbon source and realized near-zero carbon emissions. This technology offers a feasible engineering solution for low-carbon advanced denitrification of municipal wastewater.
