- Municipal sludge was used as the raw material to successfully synthesize sludge-based biochar through granulation and pyrolysis. The obtained biochar served as a carrier, into which polyethylene glycol (PEG) was impregnated and loaded as the phase-change core material, yielding a PEG/sludge-based biochar composite phase-change heat-storage conditioner. The structural characteristics and thermal performance of the prepared material were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and microcalorimetry. The results indicated that the prepared sludge-based biochar heat-storage conditioner exhibited stable phase-change thermal storage capability. The mass fraction of loaded PEG reached 77.9%, with a melting latent heat of 45.65 J/g, demonstrating favorable shape-stabilized phase-change behavior and cyclic stability. Furthermore, it could promote microbial heat release and thus enhance the efficiency of bio-drying systems.
