- Abstract:
- The development and utilization of reclaimed water represent a crucial approach to resolving the supply-demand imbalance in urban water resources and achieving water conservation. This study calculates the supply-demand balance of urban reclaimed water across 31 provincial-level administrative regions in China excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Cluster analysis was then employed to investigate their differential distribution patterns. The relationship between the maximum potential supply of reclaimed water and its demand was examined to provide tailored recommendations for water conservation strategies in different types of regions. Based on the urban reclaimed water supply-demand balance, the regions were classified into four categories: Category 1 regions largely correspond to China’s typical resource-based water-scarce areas, characterized by a low capacity for domestic water supply. Category 2 uniquely comprises the Xizang Autonomous Region, which is distinguished by its abundant water resource endowment and low water demand. As economically developed coastal areas, category 3 regions are defined by a water use structure featuring a particularly high total demand for reclaimed water and supply potential. Category 4 regions exhibit relatively high per capita domestic water consumption despite limited total water resources, and demonstrate substantial demand and supply potential for reclaimed water.
