- Title:
- Discussion of Odorant and Emerging Contaminants Items in Drinking Water Quality Standard of China and Other Countries or Regions
- Abstract:
- This paper provides a detailed discussion on the odorant and emerging contaminant items listed in the Standards for Drinking Water Quality (GB 5749-2022) in China, comparing them with standards from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Japan. Regarding odorants, China has included geosmin and 2-methylisopropanol as mandatory items in the water quality standars for the first time, becoming the second country after Japan to list them as compulsory water quality indicators. In addition, China is the first country to include 2-methyl disulfide and 2-methyl trisulfide as reference indicators in its drinking water quality standard, a significant step towards enhancing the monitoring of relevant odorants in China’s water supply industry. The latest Chinese standard includes 12 chemical items with limit concentrations or their DBPs significantly higher than their corresponding odor threshold levels, meaning that while their concentrations may meet the standard, they could still cause odor issues in drinking water. Relating emerging contaminants, there were eight emerging contaminants listed in the latest drinking water quality standard of China, while there were twelve emerging contaminants have been listed in the standards of all countries or regions. The former accounted for 67% of the latter, which ranked the first. The inclusion of emerging contaminants in drinking water quality standards is a growing global trend, but the related items and limit concentrations should be more precisely defined.
