- Abstract:
- A pilot-scale anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) system with a treatment capacity of 96 m3/d was constructed at Zhangguizhuang Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Tianjin and operated continuously for 226 days to evaluate the effectiveness of a staged AO control strategy in enhancing AOA performance. Under low C/N conditions (approximately 4.0), the effluent total nitrogen (TN) remained stable at 8.1 mg/L, and the TN removal efficiency increased markedly from 62.1% to 81.8%, achieving excellent nitrogen removal without the need for external carbon source addition. The relative abundance of Ca. Competibacter increased substantially from 0.1% on day 3 to 0.8% on day 220, indicating that the staged AO strategy facilitated the enrichment of key endogenous denitrifiers, which played an important role in the high TN removal efficiency. Overall, the staged AO configuration significantly enhanced the nitrogen removal performance of the AOA pilot-scale process under carbon-limited conditions, providing strong technical support for its future full-scale application.
